East Sussex County Council in partnership with Brighton and Hove are considering
locating new land fill/raise sites on six areas in the Low Weald Halland, Golden Cross,
Laughton and Hellingly as well as two sites in Lewes District.
Conservative County Cllr Nick Bennett said that 'We should be considering other methods
of disposal before land fill/raise, there are many other ways of dealing with our
waste- anaerobic digester, plazma technology or incinerating. But we all must do
more to reduce, re-use recycle'.
The landfill directive also calls on us to move away from dumping waste in a hole.
We must start seeing our waste as a resource.

Conservative Councillors Barby Dashwood-Hall (WDC) and Nick Bennett (ESCC) have raised
concern over the need for new landfill and specifically length of consultation for
the various proposals. They have successfully gained agreement to deferring the
original consultation deadline from 02.12.09 to 15.01.10
The Low Weald is not suitable for this type of disposal - it is generally flatter
than other areas so mound of over 25 m high will be far more prominent.
Land fill/raise which should be the last resort as it is not a sustainable way of
disposing of our rubbish. Any site will increase heavy lorry traffic on the A roads
particularly the A22 which is only partly a dual carriageway. Only this week the
Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and Shadow Secretary of State
Nick Herbert called for more to be done to encourage us to recycle and to stop
the practice of landfill.
